Berlin – Yoshitoshi Shinomiya’s debut feature has put him in excellent company.
Before ”A New Dawn” was selected to compete for the top prize at this year’s Berlin International Film Festival, only two other animated Japanese films had been in contention. The first was “Spirited Away,” which won the Golden Bear for Hayao Miyazaki in 2002. The second came in 2023 with Makoto Shinkai’s “Suzume.”
Though the prize ultimately went to Turkish-German filmmaker Ilker Catak for his “Yellow Letters,” Shinomiya can still take pride in the fact that he joins the company of Miyazaki and Shinkai, the latter of whom he worked with extensively on “Your Name.” and “The Garden of Words.”
