Hirokazu Koreeda’s “Look Back” is both one of the most attractive films to come out of Japan this year and one of the least necessary.

When it was first announced, this live-action adaptation of the pithy, poignant manga by “Chainsaw Man” creator Tatsuki Fujimoto prompted as much perplexity as enthusiasm.

Kiyotaka Oshiyama’s near-perfect 2024 anime version is a tough act to follow. And while it isn’t unusual for a hit manga to spawn multiple adaptations, they don’t normally involve a filmmaker of Koreeda’s stature.
