The Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF), whose 39th edition will unspool Oct. 26 to Nov. 4, has always been a showcase for Japanese cinema, from classics by golden age masters to indies by up-and-coming directors.
Two of the biggest Japanese titles at TIFF this year are Takahisa Zeze’s “Sukiyaki,” which opens the festival on Oct. 26, and Takashi Yamazaki’s “Godzilla Minus Zero,” its Nov. 1 centerpiece screening.?
Inspired by the song “Sukiyaki,” which became a worldwide hit for Kyu Sakamoto in 1963, the former film focuses not only on singer Sakamoto (Taiga Nakano) but also on composer Hachidai Nakamura (Junichi Okada) and lyricist Rokusuke Ei (Tori Matsuzaka).?
