Gaming giant Sony Interactive Entertainment will stop manufacturing physical discs for its video games from January 2028.
In a July 1 post to the company’s official , senior director of content communications Sid Shuman explained that the move to release all future PlayStation games as digital downloads is “a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs.”
Games scheduled to release on physical media prior to January 2028 will remain unaffected, Shuman added. After that, however, “new games will be available on (the online) PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only.”
