Nara – Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung confirmed the “strategic importance” of their countries’ ties during a meeting in Nara on Tuesday, with the two agreeing to boost cooperation on economic security and reaching a deal on DNA testing for Korean wartime laborers who died in Japan.
The meeting was the two leaders’ first attempt at “shuttle diplomacy,” or routine mutual visits to each other’s country, under Takaichi’s government. It came just a week after Lee visited China for talks with leader Xi Jinping amid an ongoing row between Beijing and Tokyo that has pushed ties down to fresh lows.
“Beginning with this visit, I hope to further elevate Japan-South Korea relations to new heights,“ Takaichi said at a joint press announcement.
