The Centrist Reform Alliance (CRA) is facing serious questions about its future in the wake of a disastrous defeat in Sunday’s general election — starting with picking a new leader.

The fledgling opposition party — founded by the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan (CDP) and Komeito just days ahead of the Jan. 23 Lower House dissolution — is now preparing for a party leadership vote ahead of Feb. 18, where Sanae Takaichi will be reconfirmed as the country’s prime minister by parliament.

The CRA’s newly elected lawmakers held a plenary meeting in Tokyo on Wednesday and agreed to pick a new chief on Friday.
