Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. sought to win back public support in his annual address on Monday, pledging an anti-corruption crackdown that will not spare even a close relative, and proposing tax relief for the middle class.

The nation’s anti-graft watchdog is close to filing cases against his cousin, former House Speaker Martin Romualdez, Marcos said in his State of the Nation Address to Congress.

“Painful as it may be for me, but we must do what is right,” Marcos said Monday. “I am not the president of my family. I am not the president of my friends. I am the president of the Philippines.”
