Taungbyone, Myanmar – As monsoon rains pound the heartlands of war-fractured Myanmar, “spirit consorts” gather to renew their vows with a pantheon of gods hailed for their powers to protect and destroy.
Drinking, dancing and swooning, the dazzling mediums communed with the 111 divine ghosts of ancient Burmese folk religion at the Taungbyone Festival.
“If you truly believe in them, they do come to you,” said 35-year-old spirit consort Shwe Moe Thae Kyaw Kyaw.
