Drivers age 75 years and above with records of traffic violations will soon be subjected to a stricter driving test when they renew their driver’s license, the National Police Agency said Thursday.
Accidents involving older drivers are a longstanding problem in Japan.
Currently, older drivers who have committed violations such as ignoring traffic signals and speeding in the three years before the renewal of their driver’s license already have to take a driving skill test. The test checks if drivers can properly steer the wheel and adhere to traffic signs and lights.
