Chubu Electric Power’s top two executives said Monday they will resign after a third-party investigation showed that pressure from management for an early restart of its Hamaoka nuclear plant was partially behind the utility’s submission of improper earthquake risk data to a government watchdog.
Chubu Electric said it will withdraw its safety screening application with the Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA), a prerequisite for restarting nuclear reactors, and aim to reapply in the future after regaining public trust.
This effectively means the utility will need to start from scratch when it reapplies for its two reactors — a process that has already taken more than a decade.
