Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, who also leads the Liberal Democratic Party, introduced few new faces in her party leadership reshuffle Wednesday while retaining key figures.

The decision comes as Takaichi — whose approval rating remains high — and the LDP look to keep the party in the hands of veterans ahead of the fall session of parliament, where the LDP has a two-thirds majority in the Lower House but will need to work with the opposition in the Upper House, where it is short of a majority.

“The LDP received a huge mandate in February’s Lower House election,” Takaichi said after the party unveiled the new lineup. “To realize the pledges we made, executives have been appointed to create a system to implement them that utilizes the full strength of the government and the LDP.”
