Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi unveiled her new Cabinet lineup on Thursday, with many key ministers remaining in place but a few new faces in other positions as she prepares for what is expected to be a difficult session of parliament slated to convene next month.
Takaichi, who is president of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, brought a member of the Japan Innovation Party (JIP) into the Cabinet for the first time, a sign of the growing importance of the LDP’s coalition partner to her administration.
“It is a symbol that the LDP-JIP coalition has entered a new phase,” Takaichi said during a news conference Thursday evening.
