U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed Saturday that he had discussed Taiwan at his summit with Chinese leader Xi Jinping last week, saying that Xi “understands” his position on the democratic island.

“We didn’t spend a lot of time talking about Taiwan. He understands very much how I feel,” he told reporters at the White House.

Following the summit, U.S. Ambassador to China David Perdue told Fox News that Taiwan had “came up briefly” in Trump’s talks with Xi, but said that the U.S. president had reiterated Washington’s stance toward the island.
