The parents of a 17-year-old high school student who died in a boat accident off Henoko in Nago, Okinawa Prefecture, during a school trip in March have met with the prefecture’s governor to call for stronger safety measures for such trips.

They met with Okinawa Gov. Genta Koja on Saturday, urging the prefectural government to develop guidelines and take other steps to prevent similar tragedies.

Prior to meeting the parents, Koja visited the Henoko fishing port near the site of the accident and laid flowers.
