On Sunday, for just the third time in 74 tournaments, a college freshman claimed the title of amateur yokozuna.
The rare feat was achieved by a student from Nihon University, with Hikaru Samejima joining former alumnus Keita Kushima (1983) and Nippon Sport Science University’s Hidetora Hanada (2020) in one of amateur sumo’s most exclusive clubs.
Saitama Prefecture native Samejima downed Yasuhiro Mori of Kanazawa Gakuin University in the final bout of the day-long meet held at Tokyo’s Ryogoku Kokugikan.
