According to a Japanese media report, the former amateur yokozuna was still mulling over the decision right up until the deadline, but ultimately chose to forgo turning pro in favor of keeping his options open in other fields.
Given Hanada’s career to date, the decision is probably the correct one on a personal level, even if it is a significant missed opportunity for sumo.
